Find the ideal gift for Mothers Day!!
So what do you buy the mum who has everything? Well if she’s a horsey mum I’m sure she has a long list of wants and needs (which obviously translates to ‘cannot live without’) .
As Mother’s Day is looming and youv’e probably been wracking your brains for the perfect present, here’s my guide to those ‘essentials’ that are bound to make you very popular!
Whether your mum is a traditionalist or a wee bit more adventurous Top Stocks have a huge selection of high quality riding stocks in cotton and silk. These are all handmade in small runs, giving the rider a sense of true individuality.
Liberty tana lawn cotton designs are a firm favourite with those that wear tweed hacking jackets as the beautiful colours can be easily matched up to individual tweed designs. Tana lawn is also beautifully soft and silk like in handle, giving a very comfortable feel. My top tip is to look at the tweed and see if there are any stripes or checks within the design – try to pick these colours out in your stock design and you will truly stand out from the crowd. Or if the jacket has a velvet colour try to match up the stock to the colour of the collar – this looks truly stunning and very smart. Keepers Tweed is the easiest as everything goes with it – go contrasting with blues or reds, or tonal with greens and browns.
For those dressage divas out there, whether they wear a show jacket or tails the silk stocks with embroidery, beadwork or just plain give a crisp, luxurious finish to your competition outfit turnout. If cotton is preferred there are some lovely subtle white on white or white on cream prints. Designs include florals, spots and stripes. If you feel the part this will give you confidence to ride your best and impress the judges!
All stocks come in a gift box which makes for a handy storage box and a ‘how to tie your new stock’ illustration card. There is also a brilliant master class video, kindly shared by the Vintage Tackroom, on the website if anyone needs a reminder.
For the ultimate finishing touch how about a vintage stock pin? Gold or silver with pearls, coloured gemstones, or plain – there is a comprehensive range at www.top-stocks.co.uk. Favourites include the rich, intense blues of butterfly wing cabachon (perfect with beautiful white or cream stock and a navy show jacket/hunt coat), agates including Connemara marble, and the ever popular pearls, marcasites, and diamante. Prices range from £12.00 – £60.00 so there is something for every taste and budget. Again the pins come in a smart storage box so you can keep your pin safe for its next outing.
Coming up to the new eventing season there is a lovely range of competition and casual clothing coming in – personal favourites are the Agaso Cambridge breeches as they are super comfortable with 4 way stretch water repellent technical fabric, silicon full seat (gives a secure grip without being over the top super sticky so you can move in the saddle), slightly higher waisted with a wide waistband and no bulk stretch ankle cuffs. New for 2019 are the stunning HyPerformance Merlewood breeches in the most gorgeous marine green which is a rich teal green/blue shade – these are a similar fabric to the Agaso breeches.
Or what about a baselayer for that all important XC round? The new Coldstream Lennel is available in black, navy/raspberry or Windsor (a deep wine red)/black – super light in a breathable, wicking fabric and so comfortable.
Also available are some beautiful show shirts – the HyPerformamce Laila design with small lace inset panels at the shoulder is proving very popular, or the Downham, again from HyPerformance, which is a traditional short sleeved stock shirt with a loop at back of the neck and button to attach your stock to, but in a breathable sports fabric which is proving very popular with eventers and dressage riders alike. For those that like to wear a tie there is the Tilbury shirt in a lovely pale yellow. These are all very reasonably priced – brilliant quality too!
Or for a bit of luxury, with practical sportswear properties there is the Findra range – tops, neckwarmers, headbands and bobble hats – new colours are on their way right now! Personal favourites are the Betty neckwarmer in a myriad of colours – perfect hacking out gear if it’s a bit chilly to stop the cold seeping in. And the tops are great for layering up. The merino yarn that is used for the Findra range is an Italian sport merino that has the most amazing antibacterial and heat regulating properties, so is not just for cold weather. With super fine weight, seamless knitting technology, thumbholes and shaped back seams these are true sportswear garments – designed for walking, running, cycling and of course, horse riding. Made in the U.K. they are definetely fit for purpose!
